Some Rhode Islanders swear that the buildings are haunted, claiming they hear moaning, crying, and footsteps coming from the crumbling walls. The Ladd School was a mental rehabilitation hospital that opened its doors in 1907... starting with less than a dozen patents. By the 1950s it housed nearly a thousand. Allegations of patient abuse and neglect were cause enough for an investigation and in 1993 the school was shut down.
